Defamation & Privacy

We’re able to secure swift and effective outcomes for our clients

We work with a broad spectrum of clients across the media, entertainment and creative industries. Our substantial experience in the relevant industries enables us to help our clients navigate their way through the legal complexities and provide practical solutions to their problems.

The depth of our experience and the diverse nature of our clients means that our Defamation & Privacy team is uniquely placed. Our lawyers have been immersed in the world of published content and reputational issues for over 20 years, representing the varied interests of our clients across the media, entertainment and creative industries. Whether these are mainstream creators or publishers of content, or individuals or corporates suddenly exposed to the media glare, our team of experienced lawyers can draw on their experience to provide tailored legal advice that covers every aspect of this type of work.

Much of our work is for production companies making (often controversial) content within the film and TV sector. We stand with our clients every step of the way in their journey to broadcast/publication, providing pre-publication legal clearance and compliance advice in respect of all kinds of audio-visual, online and printed content. The work we advise on includes “true story” dramatisations, documentaries, scripted drama, autobiographies, advertisements and other media content.

We understand the issues that our clients face and go far beyond merely identifying legal problems that may arise. We work with our creative clients to provide practical and workable solutions to their content-related issues, and our in-depth industry knowledge gives us insight into what will prove acceptable to insurers, regulators, distributors or otherwise.

Our reputation for providing sensible and robust pre-publication solutions has led to us now being regularly instructed by a wide range of media defendants when disputes arise. These include mainstream broadcasters, streamers, all the main E&O insurance companies, TV production companies, advertising agencies, book publishers and a range of other independent content creators.

Our team has experience representing clients in High Court and Court of Appeal proceedings, as well as resolving claims through mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

Separately, our team also represents a select number of high-profile individuals, from politicians and other public figures to musicians, actors, and TV personalities. Our work in acting for  high profile talent focusses on protecting individuals from the excesses of the tabloid media. We provide critical support in times of crisis, frequently working closely with managers and PR agencies to help clients manage public perception and media coverage in high-stakes situations.

We understand that reputation can be more about prevention than cure, and our clients rely on us to manage this for them. The online world in particular poses a raft of challenges for managing privacy, demanding a sophisticated response.
